Built in 1910, Mount Buffalo Chalet is a significant historic timber building in Victoria. Restoring a property of this age requires careful work to protect its original character and materials. The goal of this project was not to make the building look new, but to carefully restore and preserve what was already there.
Restoring Character, Not Replacing It Every part of the project was approached with the history of the building in mind. The focus was on retaining as much of the original timber, parquet flooring and architectural detail as possible. The finished restoration preserves the character of Mount Buffalo Chalet while giving its timber elements a renewed and lasting finish.

The original parquet timber flooring was also restored as part of the project. The floor was carefully prepared and refinished, with attention given to preserving its original appearance and character. The work helped bring the timber flooring back to life while maintaining the heritage feel of the building.

Timber Restoration & Repairs
The existing timber was carefully inspected to identify areas that could be restored and areas that were beyond repair. Where possible, the original timber was retained. Only sections that could no longer be safely used were repaired or replaced, helping maintain the building’s original character.
Careful Preparation & Painting
Rather than simply painting over existing surfaces, the restoration involved detailed preparation. Old paint was removed where required, timber surfaces were prepared and treated, and the windows, doors and other timber elements were refinished to achieve a clean and durable result.
